Early Life and Education
Laurie Lee was born in 1914 to Reginald and Annie Lee. His father remained in London for work, leaving Laurie and his siblings to reside in the village of Slad with their mother. After attending local school, Laurie's education was frequently interrupted by respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia. At age 16, he dropped out of school and began working for an auditing firm, Randall and Payne.
Literary Beginnings
In 1934, Laurie Lee left his job and embarked on a journey to London. Along the way, he performed street concerts on the violin. He settled in Putney, where he worked as a bricklayer's assistant. Lee's writing career began during this period, with his poems being published in various newspapers. In 1934, he won a poetry competition organized by The Sunday Referee.
The Spanish Civil War
In July 1935, Lee traveled to Spain and joined the International Brigades. He witnessed firsthand the horrors and brutality of the war and returned to London in 1938. After his return, he lived with Lorna Wishart, who gave birth to their daughter Yasmin in 1939. However, Wishart returned to her husband three months later, although their relationship continued for some time.
World War II and Literary Career
During World War II, Lee attempted to join the British Army but was rejected due to health issues. He worked as a sound engineer and wrote scripts for documentary films. After the war, he devoted himself to literature, writing journalism, screenplays, and radio plays. Lee became an advocate for British rural life and returned to his childhood home in the 1960s.
Literary Legacy
Laurie Lee is primarily known for his "Cider with Rosie" trilogy, which chronicled his childhood in the Cotswolds and his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. The trilogy was published in 1992 as a single volume and has been reprinted several times since.
