Early Life and Education
Fern Britton was born in 1957 in Ealing, London, to actor Tony Britton and his wife Ruth. She attended Dr Challoner's High School and the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Broadcast Journalism Career
After graduating, Britton worked for a touring theatre company before joining Westward Television in 1979. She became a newsreader for the nightly program "Westward Diary." In 1981, she moved to BBC's local office, presenting the news program "Spotlight."
Britton later joined BBC One, becoming the youngest news anchor in the channel's history. She also hosted programs on TVS, including "Coast to Coast," "Coast to Coast People," and "The Television Show."
Television Presenter and Host
Over the years, Britton hosted or guest-starred on numerous popular shows, including "The Brian Conley Show" and BBC "One's Holiday." In 1994, she co-created and hosted the cooking show "Ready Steady Cook," which ran until 2000.
She has also hosted the Pride of Britain Awards several times. In 2006, she presented "Soapstar Superstar" for Granada Television. That same year, she hosted The British Soap Awards.
Britton co-hosted the daytime show "This Morning" with Phillip Schofield from 1999 to 2009. The show won numerous awards, including the TV Quick Award in 2003 and 2004 and the National Television Award in 2004 for best daytime show.
In 2007, she created the show "That's What I Call Television," which featured herself and a guest reminiscing about classic film and television moments since 1980.
Controversies
Britton has denied rumors that she underwent plastic surgery, claiming her weight loss was due to cycling and a healthy diet. However, she later admitted to having an operation to assist her weight loss. Some fellow TV presenters criticized critics and journalists for making a scandal out of the issue.
Personal Life
Britton has been married twice: first to Clive Jones, with whom she had a daughter, Winnie; and later to Phil Vickery, with whom she had three children.
