Abbas II: Reign and Influence
Abbas II became Shah of Iran in May 1642, succeeding his father, Shah Safi I. He ascended to the throne amidst great expectations, inheriting an empire that had flourished under his predecessor.
Rise and Reign
Abbas II's reign was characterized by a blend of strength and weakness. While he was known to indulge in excessive alcohol consumption and exhibited a carefree demeanor, he also exhibited moments of competent leadership. He relied heavily on the whims of courtiers, but his regime nevertheless achieved notable successes.
Military Victories and Economic Prosperity
In 1649, Abbas II's forces recaptured the city of Kandahar from the Mughal Empire, demonstrating the might of the Safavid dynasty. His rule also witnessed economic growth and stability, with European travelers remarking on the prosperity of Persia.
Foreign Relations
عباس دوم روابط تجاری نزدیکی با امپراتوری روسیه برقرار کرد. در جریان لشکرکشی ارتش عباس دوم به شمال قفقاز، پاسگاه روسی سونژنسکی اوستروگ به آتش کشیده شد. در سال 1664 عباس دوم امتیاز تجارت آزاد را به بازرگانان روسی در قلمرو ایران داد.
در زمان عباس دوم، حدود هفت هزار ازبک کوچ نشین به همراه امیران خود و یکی از شاهزادگان، به دلیل اختلافات داخلی در ماوراءالنهر، به ایران پناهنده شدند و در خدمت شاه پذیرفته شدند. در ماوراء قفقاز، هفت هزار دختر را به زور گرفته و به این ازبک ها به عنوان همسر واگذار کردند.
روابط دولت صفوی با امپراتوری عثمانی تا دهه 20 قرن هجدهم میلادی مسالمت آمیز باقی ماند، زیرا بین دو دولت توازن قوا برقرار شد و از سرگیری اقدامات نظامی برای هر دو دولت بی فایده به نظر می رسید.
در زمان عباس دوم، نقش بازرگانان اروپایی در ایران پررنگ تر شد و امتیازاتی به بازرگانان فرانسوی داده شد. پیش از این، امتیازهای مشابهی در تجارت ابریشم بدون پرداخت عوارض به بازرگانان انگلیسی و هلندی توسط صفوی اول داده شده بود.
