Lauren Graham: The Girl in Gilmore and the Woman in Law & Order

Lauren Helen Graham was born on March 16, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father, Lawrence Graham, was a confectionary association executive, and her mother, Donna Grant, was a singer and model. After her parents divorced when she was five, Graham traveled extensively with her father before settling down in Virginia for elementary school. She later attended Langley High School and earned a degree in English from Barnard College, part of Columbia University. In 1992, she graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Master of Fine Arts in Acting.

From Waitress to World Cup Mascot

After graduating, Graham moved to New York City and worked as a waitress in a cocktail bar. She landed a break when she was cast as the mascot dog for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In 1995, she relocated to Hollywood and appeared in several short-lived sitcoms.

Rise to Fame in Television

From 1996 to 1997, Graham began appearing in episodic roles in popular shows such as "3rd Rock from the Sun," "Caroline in the City," and "Law & Order." Her breakout role came in the sitcom "NewsRadio," which led to her being cast as the lead in "Gilmore Girls" in 2000. The show garnered critical acclaim and earned Graham a Golden Globe nomination in 2001 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama. She starred in "Gilmore Girls" for seven seasons, and although she declined to return for the eighth season, she has since made occasional guest appearances.

Graham has appeared in several feature films, including "Sweet November" (2001) with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron, "Bad Santa" (2003) with Billy Bob Thornton, "Seeing Other People" (2004), "The Pacifier" (2005) with Vin Diesel, and "Evan Almighty" (2007). She continues to work in both television and film, and has appeared in numerous shows since "Gilmore Girls," including "The Mindy Project," "Parenthood," and "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist."

Personal Life

Graham has never married and has no children. She is known for her witty personality and her close friendship with her "Gilmore Girls" co-star Alexis Bledel.
